Gay Judge Rules Proposition 8 Unconstitutional

By Alan J. Reinach

Yesterday, Federal Judge Vaughn Walker struck down California’s Proposition 8, which defined marriage as between a man and a woman.  He ruled that the Proposition, which had been passed by a majority of Californians in 2008, serves no legitimate government purpose.  He held, rather, that it deprives same-sex couples of the fundamental right to marry, in violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. This ruling was predictable. Several months ago, as the trial was more... (64 Comments)

A Dangerous Cross

By Alan J. Reinach

In 1934, a chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars [“VFW”] from, of all the desolate places on earth, Death Valley, California, placed a modest cross, constructed out of steel pipe, on a remote hilltop in the Mojave Desert, as a memorial to Americans killed in the First World War. As a marker to honor the dead, the cross is an ancient symbol. Of course, it more... (49 Comments)

Lutheran Church Votes to Approve Gay Clergy

By Alan J. Reinach

I’ve been reading a wonderful new history of the Reformation. Luther’s famous stand before the Emperor was made on the basis of scripture. Luther risked his life on the principle that the Bible, not tradition, is the foundation of church belief and practice. Ever since, Protestantism has been defined by this fundamental commitment to the Bible.  more... (60 Comments)

“Social and Moral Nonsense:” Attacks on Marriage Continue Unabated

By Alan J. Reinach

Has the traditional family become "social and moral nonsense?"  Tim Rutten, writer for the Los Angeles Times, apparently thinks so.  This is the phrase he uses describe the recent California Supreme Court decision upholding the validity of Proposition 8, which amends the California constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman.   Rutten's views seem par for the course for the "chattering classes" of professional opinion shapers.  This group seems largely bent on more... Hate Crimes and Hate Speech

By James Standish

The “Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007” is a bill that would extend federal jurisdiction to, and provide federal resources for, the investigation and prosecution of “hate crimes.”  Further, it sets the prison terms for “hate crimes” in some circumstances. There are four primary concerns over the bill: First, some claim it will outlaw speech by those who believe homosexual activity is immoral. Second, some claim the bill provides unequal justice to the victims more... (66 Comments)
