NARLA Supports Fight Against Global Blasphemy Law at the UN in Geneva

By James Standish

The International Religious Liberty Association’s  “Statement of Concern about Proposals Regarding Defamation of Religions” was distributed today at that the meeting of the UN Human Rights Council’s Ad Hoc Committee on the Elaboration of Complementary Standards, in Geneva. The Ad Hoc Committee has wide, if somewhat ambiguous, authority to “prepare complementary international standards to strengthen and update international instruments against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related more... Live from the United Nations General Assembly

By James Standish

Sitting in the United Nations General Assembly this morning, the words from a meeting yesterday with a leader in one of the world's largest development organizations echoed in my ears:   “Adventists need to be involved at the U.N.—not because of what you’re going to get, but because of what more... Defamation of Religions at the UN

By Barry Bussey

"That man is bad!" declared Margaret More as she perceived the avarice of Richard Rich, the man who's later perjury would be responsible, as far as Robert Bolt's retelling of the story is concerned, for the beheading of her father Sir Thomas More.  "There is no law against that," Sir Thomas noted.  Butting in unceremoniously to the conversation was the young Roper, Margaret's suitor.  Roper, as rash as he was young, bellowed after Thomas, "There is! God's more... (33 Comments)

Rising and Falling - Together: The Economy and Sunday Laws

By Barry Bussey

The most pervasive topic of discussion in Washington these days is the economy.  Everything else pales in comparison.  The President and his cabinet - leaders of the House and Senate are all talking about the economy.  The effects of the stimulus bill will take some time before you or I feel it on "Main Street".  The jury is still out as to its ultimate effect - it may prove to be too much of a more... Same Sex Marriage, Censorship and the Separation of Church and State

By Alan J. Reinach

Introduction: A group calling itself “Adventists Against Proposition 8” has challenged the Church State Council’s support for a California Constitutional Amendment retaining the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman. This group insists that the church’s historic views of the separation of church and state warrant such opposition. The statement below dispels misconceptions and clearly explains why Adventists can oppose same-sex marriage without violating the principle of church-state separation. When people argue that more... Same Sex Marriage Threatens Religious Liberty

By Alan J. Reinach

In theory, allowing homosexual couples to marry should not threaten anyone’s religious freedom. Although the social and moral implications of gay marriage are apparent to many, few realize the significant danger posed to religious freedom by the California Supreme Court ruling in May giving gays a constitutional right to marry. The Court’s decision now elevates homosexuality to the same legal status as race, a protected class. This Court has refused to grant religious freedom more... (186 Comments)

Home School Outlaws

By Nicholas Miller

On February 29th of this year more than 160,000 otherwise law-abiding California families awoke to read the news that a California appeals court had declared them outlaws. The crime?—home schooling their children in violation of California compulsory school attendance laws. And what about their parental and religious constitutional rights?—dismissed by the court, largely on the strength of two California state court decisions from about fifty years ago. The decision immediately created a more... (68 Comments)

A Texas Sized Mess!

By Alan J. Reinach

Texas is a big state with an even bigger ego, and now it has a legal mess to match. Everyone is familiar with the incursion of government officials into the Yearning For Zion compound of the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints. We all know that 413 children [and counting]  were removed ostensibly for their own protection, and that the legal games have begun. Many questions are being asked about religious freedom, and more... (18 Comments)

In Re: Rachel L: Homeschooling Declared Illegal in California

By Alan J. Reinach

A California appeals court held recently that parents have no constitutional right to home school their children, and that only parents who possess state teaching credentials are eligible to teach at home. The decision has generated widespread press coverage, and considerable concern among both homeschooling parents, and those who value parental rights. You can read the decision for yourself at http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/opinions/documents/B192878.PDF. Home School Legal Defense Association has already created a petition to “decertify” the more...
